Local population in the area of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park and surroundings
5 Purpose and objectives of the programme
  • Protection and preservation of the protected landrace breed of Slavonian Syrmian Podolian cattle and increasing population size.
  • Preservation of the traditional form of farm production that is characterised by “an archetypal manner of livestock keeping with mixed droves of pigs, herds of horses and cows, flocks of geese and other species… that can no longer be found anywhere”.
  • Enhancement of the marketing concept of added value that derives from the phenomenon of free range / archetypal grazing, which has on the market today the connotations of healthy or organic and accordingly fetches higher prices.
6 Area of the programme Area of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, Orlinci pastures
7 Financial outline of the programme Approximate annual costs for one Slavonian-Syrmian Podolian cow come to 3,600 kuna for hay, 1,000 kuna for maize, and 1,500 for veterinary services, or in total 6,100 kuna per cow.
8 Implementation In 2004 the Institution procured from the Križevci Stockbreeding Reproduction Centre 19 cows, one bull and 1 calf. Today it has 41 cows in the main herd, and one bull of this breed.
The annual increment (calves born) is sold to the local population if interested (in line with enquiries). The number of calves sold to the local population depends on the number of calves weaned and the interest of the local people.
9 Equipment required Pasture, paddock and shelter in the Orlinci pastures by the village of Krapje
10 Educational programme The main herd of the Slavonian-Sryrmian Podolian cattle is part of the presentation in the visiting system of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park
11 Results The programme has resulted in an increase in the number of breeding (cows and bulls) of SSP cattle in the ownership of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park Public Institution and of the local population in the Park and surroundings
